About the Exhibition

How to start a perfect day? With a pencil, paintbrush or pair of scissors in hand. The feeling of being "in the zone" is great!

After years of art lessons, I try to retain the freshness of my instincts. Rock, blues or jazz music sets the mood in my studio. Curious images begin to evolve. Transforming and altering the context of my sources, I twist shapes into playful compositions. Objects are suspended between the real and imagined world. During the process, brush strokes produce lines and marks. While exploring color combinations I give the shapes organizational qualities and balance. Themes may change within minutes, sometimes switching my attention to working on more than one canvas at a time. I have no idea how my final image will look. It's an enjoyable journey!

I came across a quote by the German artist Blinky Palermo, which I feel captures the way I work. "I pursue no specific direction in the sense of a style... I have no program. What I have is an aesthetic concept, whereby I try to keep as many expressive options open for myself as possible."

Balancing Acts is a new series of acrylics and mixed media works. So many things in our lives revolve around the act of balancing. Or not balancing! Years ago I had a long bout with vertigo. Three acrylic pieces in the exhibit express those dizzying sensations.

About the Artist

Growing up and spending most of her life near New York City, Susan spent many hours in that city's great art museums. She got the bug! High school provided the opportunity to work with talented teachers who guided her into The School of Visual Arts, NYC, and later to SUNY at Farmingdale where she earned a degree in advertising art & design. She worked in the Big Apple at three different advertising firms, until family life became a priority.

She kept her art habit on track, doing freelance work and still attending art classes. Community art associations needed volunteers and board members, so Susan joined three & four at a time. She won many awards along the way.

She credits the Silvermine Art School in New Canaan, CT for great instructors and the Stamford Loft Artists for providing a handsome exhibit space.

Before moving to Lewes in 2016, Susan exhibited A Very Wild West Show in two different venues in Connecticut. Other solo shows were held at the Mayor's Gallery in Stamford, CT and the Mayor's Gallery in Danbury, CT. Creatures exhibited at The Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT. Last summer an updated Creatures showed at Camp Rehoboth.

Susan's paintings and mixed media works hang in private collections across the United States, the Caribbean and Canada.
