Intro to Oil Painting

Always wanted to work in oils, but not sure? This class is designed for the beginner as well as the intermediate level of student. Students will develop a painting from a still life or photograph. You will be introduced to the ways that artists see and how that determines the style of a painting. Students will explore subject matter such as: themes and variations, pictorial balance, passage, mood, characteristics of color (including hue, value and intensity), mass and volume, and the hierarchy of edges and the handling of paint.

Lessons will cover basic construction techniques along with a serious introduction to glaze and surface treatment.

Painting the Portrait in Watercolor from Photographs with Ted Nuttal

Though often viewed by man as intimidating and challenging, painting the figure can be just as approachable as a still life or landscape and brings with its ac-complishment a unique satisfaction and reward. In his workshop Ted will discuss, with daily demonstrations and one-on-one interaction with class members, how to achieve spontaneity, character and life in your figure paintings. As he shares with you his approach to the figure and some specific techniques he uses to bring excitement to his paintings, you will find your paintings taking on a new life and have great fun in the process.

From Mud to Maiolica Pottery Workshop

Saturdays, September 25 and October 2, 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m.


Tiles, simple bowls or platters will be slab constructed using a rich dark brown maiolica clay. Classic opaque white glazes are combined with the brushwork techniques of in-glaze painting characteristics of this colorful ceramic art form. Please note that these techniques are easily adapted to cone 6 firing temperatures and a suitable high fire glaze recipe will be provided, making this a useful class to anyone who attends open pottery days at RAL.

TRY IT! Potter's Wheel One Day Workshop

Sundays, Sept. 26, October 3, November 14 and December 30  1:00 p.m.—3:30 p.m.


Experiment and explore in one of these weekend sessions for adults who are curious about the potter’s wheel. You’ll cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. Students will decorate finished pieces using commercial underglaze. Instructor will clear glaze pieces after they are bisque fired. Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for drying/ firing of work.
